World Cup 2010 Qualifying:

Two-time world champions Uruguay clinched the 32nd and final place in South Africa with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Costa Rica. Oscar Tabarez's men will reflect on their priceless 1-0 victory in San Jose on Saturday, which meant all they needed was to avoid defeat in Montevideo on Wednesday. They took the lead through Sebastian Abreu and although Walter Centeno equalised for Costa Rica, the visitors failed to level the tie.

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was quoted "There is a lot to improve on. We'll do so and we'll have the World Cup to prove it. I'm very happy, mostly for the kids. The ones who are younger than eight-years-old have never seen this and now they can live it."

Past World Cup Performance:

Uruguay have won two World Cups, including the first ever World Cup in 1930 as hosts, beating Argentina 4-2 in the final in Montevideo. They won their second title in 1950, upsetting hosts Brazil 2-1 in the final match. Two semi final appearances followed in 1954 and 1970 but success has been limited since with Uruguay either failing to qualify or going out in the early rounds.

Uruguay are renowned as a physical team and they have courted controversy on more than one occasion in the past. The 3 time Copa America winners will need to be on their best behaviour and form if they are to qualify from Group A where they face France, Mexico and hosts South Africa!
